The Proprietors

Hello, my name is Deidre Diodati.  My husband, Henry, and I are the proud owners of the Capricorn House. It is a place I have admired for years as I walked past it on my way to the beach from my grandmother's "gingerbread" cottage, just down the street. Henry, a native Rhode Islander, has been in the restaurant business on Martha's Vineyard ever since graduating from college in the early 80's. We met in 1989 at one of his establishments; "Diodati's Restaurant & Clam Bar", where I took a job nights to supplement my teacher's aide salary. We were married a year later. At that time we lived on the island in a small apartment above the restaurant, and we worked side by side until we learned that I was expecting our first child. Knowing that we did not want to raise our child in that environment, we searched for a house to call home. After a long ordeal we were shown the "Capricorn House", a 7 bedroom Bed & Breakfast that had been welcoming guests for years. My dreams had come true, and though we were not certain that we wanted the name of the B&B to remain the same, we were certain that it was the right choice for our growing family.  Our son, Joseph, was born in January 1994; a Capricorn. We purchased the house three months later, and needless to say the name stuck. I believe that it was fate.  In July 1995 our second son, Nicholas, was born.  He and I saw every sunrise that summer.  Our youngest son Lucas was born in September of 2002.  And our lovely daughter Lylah arrived in August 2004.  Her birth made our family complete.

Incorporating Henry's and my knowledge of the service and hospitality industries we have brought the Capricorn House and our other businesses to a higher level, we still search for better ways to serve our guests and customers. We have owned and operated several restaurants since the purchase of the house, all of which have been successful. We recently sold our last restaurant on the island so that we can focus exclusively on serving our guests at the Capricorn House. Since we've been at the Capricorn House we have done our best to improve her with every season. In 1996 she underwent a major renovation adding private baths to all the rooms. Prior to this we had one and a half shared bathrooms in the hall. At the same time we extended the views of our three ocean facing rooms by adding a private deck to each of them. It was a painstaking and costly endeavor, but needed and much appreciated.

It was my parents that brought me to the island over 40 years ago. My grandmother, on my mother's side, was Caroline Herget or Calina to her family. She owned a quaint "gingerbread" cottage in the Methodist Campgrounds where I spent my summer vacations with my family. We grew up exploring the back roads and side streets of this special place. The island had become a sanctuary for me, as it has for many of it's visitors. We returned every year to see the changes and meet old friends.  I graduated college in 1987 and moved to the island year round.  When my grandmother passed away, the cottage was sold to my cousin.  My parents eventually they moved to Florida and I saw them less and less in the summer.  They still occasionally make trips to visit  us and spend time with their "island" grandchildren.

We all wish you welcome and promise to do our very best to make your stay at the Capricorn House a memorable experience. Come home to the Capricorn House.
